Modern badminton is usually played with rally scoring. A point is awarded on every rally, and the first side to reach 21 points wins the game if the lead is at least 2 points.
If the score reaches 20-20, the game continues until one side leads by 2 points, such as 22-20 or 25-23.
A game can continue beyond 21 when both sides are close. This is often called deuce in casual tournament language, although badminton scoring is based on the two-point lead rule.
If the score reaches 29-29, the next point wins. That means the maximum possible game score is 30-29.
Tournament organizers may choose a single game to 21 for short events or best of 3 games for a fuller match format. In best of 3, the first side to win two games wins the match.
